  14. series, the curator provides

  16. reproductions and commentary on some

  18. of the most important artists and art

  20. movements.

  23.   This month's exhibit features the
  24.  
  25. work of the 20th Century surrealist,
  26.  
  27. Rene' Magritte (1898-1967).
  28.  
  29.  
  30.    Magritte was the central core of
  31.  
  32. the Belgian surrealist movement.  Like
  33.  
  34. his fellow surrealists, Magritte used
  35.  
  36. dreamlike imagery from the mind's
  37.  
  38. subconscious to convey ideas and evoke
  39.  
  40. emotions.  In doing so, he rebelled
  41.  
  42. against the cultural and aesthetic
  43.  
  44. prejudice of the day.
  45.  
  46.  
  47.   In many ways, Magritte was viewed as
  48.  
  49. a rebel by his own revolutionary
  50.  
  51. movement: Magritte scorned most of his
  52.  
  53. fellow artists' beliefs and invented
  54.  
  55. his own rules.  Later, Magritte even
  56.  
  57. rejected the old style surrealism that
  58.  
  59. he had helped create.
  60.  
  61.  
  62.   But while the surrealist movement
  63.  
  64. had its share of controversy, it
  65.  
  66. remained a vital force in the art
  67.  
  68. world.  Magritte and his fellow
  69.  
  70. surrealists' visions inspired and
  71.  
  72. influenced a new generation of artists
  73.  
  74. that is still painting today.
